About this crochet course

We'll be making a simple, relaxed fit, short sleeved cardigan in DK yarn, following a pattern.  
 
No calculating or designing involved, simply choose your size, match the pattern gauge and start crocheting your cardigan.

You can also make a long sleeved version if you like.

This is a great course if you want to improve your pattern reading skills or simply want a longer, more relaxed course to tackle a larger project such as this with support.

Dates & Times:  

This is a 5 week course (5 x 2 hour sessions).

Skill levels 

Important : students must be confident with basic crochet techniques such as:
   
 ✧ sc (US) / dc (UK).
 ✧ dc (US) / tr (UK).
 ✧ slip stitching.
 ✧ chaining.
 ✧ counting stitches.

All other techniques will be taught in class, this includes.:

✧ extracting important information from a crochet pattern.
✧ working out which size to make.
✧ learning to swatch correctly.
✧ matching the designer's tension/gauge to get the correct finished size.
✧ work in a foundation chain.
✧ crochet in turned rows (flat fabric).
✧ use a repeating stitch pattern.
✧ increase & decrease stitches in a repeating stitch pattern.
✧ seaming flat fabric.
✧ reading a pattern that is written for multiple sizes.
✧finishing techniques.
✧garment aftercare.

Available Sizes

Sizes: 1 (2, 3, 4) {5, 6, 7} [8, 9, 10]  

To fit chest: 88 (95, 101, 108) {114, 121, 128} [134, 141, 147] cm

Finished length: 56 (57, 57, 58) {58, 59, 59} [60, 60, 61] cm

Tools & Materials 

Tools & materials are not included.

If you are using the recommended yarn, i.e. Yarnsmiths Superwash Merino DK, you do not need to have all your yarn for the first class; I will have some spare yarn for making your swatch (free). It may not be the colour you want, but will serve the purpose of familiarising yourself with the stitch pattern and having your swatch prepared.

Hooks  

The pattern calls for a 4mm hook, but depending on your personal gauge, you may need a different size.
Recommended sizes to bring:      
 ✧ 3.5mm    
 ✧ 3.75mm    
 ✧ 4mm    
 ✧ 4.25mm
 ✧ 4.5mm

What kind of yarn?

A soft wool or wool blend will work best for this cardigan. I do not recommend acrylic yarn.
Yarns with a solid colour are most suited – softly variegated or kettle dyed yarns would also work.
Strongly variegated or multi-coloured yarns can detract from the stitch and make reading the stitches tricky. Same goes fore very dark yarns, such as black or navy blue.  

Pattern calls for:

 Yarnsmiths, Merino DK Superwash, 100% Wool, 110m per 50g ball

For sizes: 1 (2, 3, 4) {5, 6, 7} [8, 9, 10] :

7 (8, 9, 10) {12, 13, 14} [16, 18, 20] skeins / balls

770 (880, 990, 1,100) {1,320, 1,430, 1,540} [1,760, 1,980, 2,200] meters

OR in a DK weight yarn which works up to the specified gauge and has similar characteristics to merino wool.

If you are thinking of using a different yarn, the main thing you are looking for is that it's roughly 110m per 50g ball or 220m per 100g skein.
